How to serve others, following Jesus' pattern?
I have been reading through Philippians this week. It is part of the read 17 New Testament Books in 17 weeks with Lisa from Conforming to the truth. She has worked hard to put together this great plan.
So this week as I was reading Philippians, and I am reminded of the difference from when I first started serving in the church and where I hope to eventually be. It all falls in how Christ served. As a follower of Christ. I want my life to model the pattern Jesus left for me. How am I supposed to do that?
Philippians 2:5-11 really hit the nail on the head.
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. - Philippians 2:5-11 NIV
See when Jesus served it wasn't prideful, it wasn't all about him and who would see him. No, Jesus was willing to go below what he deserved to help. We should follow Jesus lead, and not serve others out of selfish ambition and pride.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. - Philippians 2:3-4
In the 90's I'm sure you heard "What Would Jesus Do". How about "How would Jesus serve?"
1. Jesus would serve by filling the needs of those around him.
- Feeding the Poor
- Giving the homeless person up the road money, food, or packages of basic needs
- Giving the neighbor children snacks after school
2. Jesus would be there for people who need him
- Listening to the widow next door (having breakfast or dinner)
- Inviting the single person to lunch after church
3. Jesus would help the sick
- Pick up medicine for your neighbor
- Take food to the sick
Jesus was all about people, and not about himself. We should do nothing out of concern for our interests, but for the interest of others. Mother Teresa said, "This is the meaning of true love, to give until it hurts." Jesus ultimately gave until it hurt. Will you?
